To celebrate World Mental Health Day 10th October I shared my experience of some of the effects of microwaves on my mental health on ABC Open under the project ‘Mental Note’ (thanks ABC!) – In health and harmony, Ben
Mental health and microwaves
By Benjamin Nowland · 3 min read · From Mental Note
Electromagnetic fields (EMF) or electromagnetic radiation (EMR) encompass the low frequency magnetic radiation from power lines and appliances/vehicles as well as high frequency microwaves. In this article I talk about burgeoning antenna towers, Wi-Fi and mobile devices which emit microwaves like those that cook a chicken in our microwave oven. Depending on where we live we may now be exposed to microwave levels hundreds of thousands of times higher than two decades ago.
I was leading a life many people dream about. I had a new job, a gorgeous girlfriend and inspiring daily connections. I’d just moved into an inner-city Sydney rooftop apartment. The first days were full of pizza, ice cream and Sydney creative buzz. A week later I wasn’t sleeping. I felt agitated, anxious, jittery and was accosted by a 24/7 headache. In the past I’d done plenty of things to warrant a ‘day-after’ headache. It would always fade. This headache frightened me because it did the opposite. It strengthened in intensity. It came from deep within the skull. While unique in texture, the headache reminded me of when I decided to drop a seven-cup-a-day coffee habit. The coffee withdrawal headache lasted four days. The Sydney headache lasted four months. Within weeks my symptoms amplified to brain fog, heart palpitations and later a depression so deep I was unable to make it to work. I quit my job. I quit my girlfriend and friends. For the first time I saw psychologists and a psychiatrist.
I was fortunate to leave Sydney to camp in a National Park and observed by Sunday I was feeling almost back to ‘the old Ben’. On return to Sydney the symptoms rapidly resumed. Two weeks later I correlated the same. This time it took longer to come back to health and the decline was more swift on returning to Sydney. It was at that point I looked up from the apartment and saw the microwave towers in the distance. I formalised my journalling as the ‘Sydney EMF Experiment’. I was the observer and the observed. I was the scientist and the chimpanzee.
My correlations had led to knowledge and understanding. After four months in Sydney I was radiation pollution sick and depressed. It became urgent that I leave. I ‘radiation detoxed’ as a ‘radiation refugee’ in a rural area then wrote the book ‘Playing GOD Biological and Spiritual Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation’. The book captures the insights and research from my journey of discovery. For example:
1. Microwave radiation pollution can be classified alongside psychic pollution. Both can be considered noise or discordance waveforms. For instance when I’ve spent time with an angry relative I’ve felt argumentative. When I’ve slept next door to a microwave tower the quality of my sleep deteriorates and I feel mentally ‘jittery’. As electromagnetic beings we are susceptible to ‘pick up’ or be influenced by electromagnetic waveforms whether from Nature (trees, humans, ocean, earth) or synthetic (towers, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens, mobile phones).
2. Invisible microwave radiation is a key environmental trigger for mental health (or illness). I have observed clients (and self) improve symptoms of irritation, insomnia and anxiety after ‘radiation detoxing’.
Reduced oligodendrocyte (type of glial cell) function is linked to these illnesses with similar features in models of stress induced depressive-like biophysical behaviours such as chronic stress. Altered glial structure and function is involved in several mental illnesses. Mobile phone use is implicated in brain cancer in the form of glioma (glial cell tumours). Through glial cell alteration mobile phone use (or microwave radiation exposure in any form) is therefore connected to our mental health.
Reduce the Noise
Microwave exposure is one of multiple triggers to be addressed via my preferred holistic approach in managing mental health. Test this thesis out by travelling to a low mobile reception zone and switching off devices for a weekend. Journal your observations. How does your mental health change when away from psychic and electromagnetic radiation pollution? Create a ‘Zero EMF Sanctuary’ (low microwave exposure area) in your sleeping area. Switch off your radiation emitting devices from 8 pm until 8 am. Get involved locally – does your suburb really need another microwave tower? I’ll be sharing knowledge and awareness with groups in coming months. Contact us to organise a talk in your area.
